Full-Scale Launch of 'Public Buses' with Route Nationalization and Complete Route System Overhaul
Accelerating the Transition of Operation System to Expedite the Introduction of 'Public Buses' Within the Year
Mokpo City's public transportation policy is promoting a transition to a new transportation system.
The newly announced Mokpo-type public transportation system, named "Mokpo City Public Bus," is attracting attention as a new attempt to overcome the limitations of the current operating system through route public ownership and operational system transformation.
This public bus system was built based on social consensus. Mokpo City announced the plan to establish the Mokpo-type public transportation system last December, and achieved social consensus through expert consultation and citizen deliberation.

To address issues such as the suspension of city bus operations and operators abandoning management, the city discussed major tasks such as route public ownership methods and operational system transformation together with citizens.
As a result, the public discussion committee and citizen participation group recommended route rights purchase, efficient comprehensive route reorganization, and a mixed operational system. These recommendations were accepted, and Mokpo City is promoting the Mokpo-type public transportation system accordingly.
In March, the city proceeded with the first contract for route public ownership, and last month, it took a step closer to route public ownership by obtaining the city council's consent.
Along with route public ownership, a route reorganization to improve the efficiency of city bus operations was also implemented, aiming to provide better public transportation services to citizens.
Mayor Park Hong-ryul stated, “The Mokpo-type public transportation system, the nation’s first public transportation policy, is being steadily prepared as the ‘Mokpo City Public Bus’ with the interest and support of all members of Mokpo City, including citizens and the city council. We will continue to strive until our city’s public bus becomes not only the first but the best public transportation nationwide.”
This change in Mokpo City's public transportation policy is attracting attention as a new challenge to overcome the limitations of the current system and provide better transportation services. Expectations are growing for the future of Mokpo City, which is concentrating all administrative power to establish the system within this year.
