Lotte Chilsung Beverage Reduces Use of Plastic Labels
First in Food and Beverage Industry to Join Carbon Neutral 'RE100'
Expands Use of Renewable Energy Through Solar Power Facilities
Lotte Chilsung Beverage is focusing on enhancing sustainability to secure future competitiveness amid an uncertain business environment.
First, in January 2020, it became the first domestic bottled water brand to introduce label-free PET bottles. This bold decision aimed to reduce the unique brand visibility of Icis while improving PET bottle recycling efficiency and reducing the use of plastic labels.
The company also achieved lightweighting of PET bottles. Since February this year, the bottle neck height of all bottled water products has been lowered from 18.5mm to 12.8mm, resulting in a weight reduction of up to 12% per container volume compared to the previous plastic usage. To minimize consumer inconvenience during drinking, a new cap called ET-CAP was applied during the technology implementation process. This reduction in bottle neck height is expected to decrease the annual plastic discharge from bottled water products by 7.8%.
In December 2021, Lotte Chilsung Beverage also joined ‘RE100,’ a global initiative aiming for carbon neutrality, becoming the first domestic food and beverage company to do so. Since then, starting with the operation of solar power facilities at the Anseong plant in August 2022, the company has equipped the Anseong Injection Plant and Chungju Plant 2 with self-consumption systems for renewable energy through solar power facilities, achieving a result of sourcing 6.8% of its total electricity consumption from renewable energy last year.
Additionally, the company produces products certified with the ‘Environmental Product Declaration,’ which quantifies the environmental impact throughout the entire process of raw material extraction, production, distribution, and disposal. There are a total of 18 types, among which 11 products, including ‘Chilsung Cider 1.5ℓ,’ have additionally obtained ‘Low Carbon Product Certification’ due to their lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to similar product groups.
