First Waterfront Complex Facility on Han River to Open in August, Featuring Yachting and Windsurfing
Operating 'Water and Land Mooring Facilities' for 155 Vessels
Education and Experience Center Plus Rooftop Observatory... Promoting Water Sports Activities
'Seoul Water Sports Center,' the first water-friendly complex facility on the Han River and the largest marina in Seoul, is set to open. It is a space where individuals can enjoy personal water leisure equipment such as yachts, windsurfing, and kayaks, as well as dock personal vessels.
On the 19th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that as part of the 'Great Han River Project' and the 'Comprehensive Plan for Activating Han River Water Activities,' the 'Seoul Water Sports Center' being developed at Nanji Hangang Park will open and begin pilot operations. Educational and experiential programs will be organized in the future, with the official opening scheduled for August.
Located on Nanji Hangang-ro in Mapo-gu, the 'Seoul Water Sports Center' is a water-friendly complex facility created near the downstream side of the World Cup Bridge close to Nanji Camping Site in Nanji Hangang Park, designed to allow citizens to enjoy personal water leisure equipment on the Han River.
The main facilities include ▲water mooring docks ▲land mooring docks ▲support center ▲floating breakwater. The 'water mooring dock' is a facility where 69 powered water leisure vessels such as yachts and boats (based on 21 feet) can be docked. The nearby 'land mooring dock' on the riverside can store 86 water leisure equipment and vessels (based on 21 feet). This allows a total of 155 vessels to be docked here, which is expected to help meet the insufficient mooring demand on the Han River. Currently, there are about 3,000 vessels registered in Seoul, but the existing public mooring docks on the Han River only accommodate 130 vessels, making the facilities severely inadequate.
The 'support center' is a place where education and experiences related to water sports such as kayaking and canoeing are provided. It is a two-story building with a total floor area of 1,227㎡ on the water. The first floor includes convenience facilities such as classrooms, changing rooms, and showers, while the second floor offers rest and lounge spaces. The support center offers a variety of programs including water safety education, survival swimming, and non-powered water sports education and experiences such as canoeing and kayaking.
The 'floating breakwater' is an outer facility that blocks strong waves and winds during floods or typhoons. It is shaped to surround the front of the water mooring dock and measures 90 meters in length and 3.9 meters in width. It plays a role in stabilizing the inland water surface and ensuring the safety of vessels and users. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said, "With the opening of the Seoul Water Sports Center in Nanji Hangang Park, the Han River, which is most familiar to citizens, will become the center of water sports and a premier water leisure destination in Korea." He added, "Through the Seoul Water Sports Center, we will create a great and revitalized Han River water experience and showcase the true charm of Seoul to domestic and international tourists visiting the Han River." Mayor Oh plans to attend the opening ceremony in the afternoon and inspect the facilities before official operations begin.
