On the morning of the same day, Prosecutor General Lee visited the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office in Janggyo-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, met with Minister Lee to discuss these matters, and held a meeting with on-site labor inspectors to listen to their difficulties and express gratitude.
The prosecution and the Ministry of Employment and Labor share the recognition that wage arrears are a serious crime threatening the livelihoods of workers and their families. They have made efforts to restore the actual damages of workers through strict measures such as expanding compulsory investigations against malicious and habitual wage arrears employers, increasing formal indictment rates, and actively conducting criminal mediation through specialized criminal mediation teams for wage arrears cases.
Furthermore, since the enforcement of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, they have closely cooperated to clearly identify the causes of serious accidents and establish safe industrial sites. As a result, a total of 53 cases involving 114 individuals have been prosecuted for violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, with all sentenced cases resulting in guilty verdicts.
A representative from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office stated, "Regarding the expansion of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act to workplaces with fewer than 50 employees since January, the prosecution and the Ministry of Employment and Labor agreed that securing workers' safety is of utmost importance. To build safe workplaces, strict criminal punishment alone is insufficient; accident prevention activities such as safety inspections, guidance, and support are essential. We have reached a consensus on this and decided to further strengthen cooperation to this end."
