LG Electronics Partners with North America's No.1 EV Charging Operator 'ChargePoint'

MOU Signed to Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Business

LG Electronics is accelerating the global expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging business by partnering with the No. 1 EV charging operator (CPO) in North America.

On the 19th, LG Electronics announced that it recently signed a "Business Agreement for the Expansion of the EV Charging Business" with ChargePoint, a North American charging operator. The signing ceremony took place at ChargePoint's headquarters in Campbell, California, USA, attended by Seoh Heung-gyu, head of LG Electronics' EV charging business, Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, and others.

ChargePoint is the largest CPO operating EV charging stations across the United States and Canada. Beyond North America, it also operates EV charging businesses in 16 European countries and India, among other global markets.

Through this agreement, both companies expect to enhance their competitiveness in securing contracts for expanding charging infrastructure in public institutions. For U.S. government projects, operators are selected based on factors such as domestic production, quality, and security levels. LG’s EV chargers produced in Texas have received UL certification for charging safety, and ChargePoint’s charging management software has obtained the U.S. federal government security certification (FedRAMP).

The collaboration between LG Electronics and ChargePoint is also expected to create synergies in discovering new business opportunities in the charging sector. LG Electronics has established itself as a trusted business partner in the North American region by operating various B2B businesses such as hotel TVs, digital signage, and robots. The two companies will cooperate to expand the charging business targeting new customers, including B2B partners connected through LG Electronics’ networks in hotels, hospitals, shopping malls, and more.

Additionally, LG Electronics aims to strengthen its position as a "charging solution provider" beyond being just a "charger manufacturer" by advancing EV charging solutions together with ChargePoint.

First, they will join forces to apply LG Electronics’ commercial display advertising solution, "LG DOOH Ads," to EV chargers. LG DOOH Ads is a solution that delivers optimized advertising content for various environments such as stores and outdoor locations. By equipping chargers with LG DOOH Ads displays, diverse advertisements can be conveniently broadcast, expanding the solution experience for B2B customers.

Furthermore, LG Electronics will collaborate to integrate its ThinQ platform with ChargePoint’s home EV charging solution, Home Flex. Through this integration, ThinQ is expected to expand as a smart home platform that not only controls home appliances but also manages charging status and schedules, enabling unified management of home devices and EV chargers.

Meanwhile, CEO Jo Joo-wan has identified the EV charger business as one of the new growth engines to achieve the vision of 100 trillion KRW in sales by 2030, pledging to rapidly develop it into a trillion-KRW scale business. Following the start of EV charger production at its Texas factory in January, LG Electronics plans to expand its EV charging business into North America and further into global markets such as Europe through this agreement.
