Gyeonggi Province has uncovered an unlicensed animal funeral service operator.
On the 19th, the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police Unit announced that it is investigating a business operator who ran an animal funeral service without a license, based on reports from residents.
It was revealed that Mr. A operated an unlicensed animal funeral service in Ansan City for 3 years and 5 months, from December 2020 to early May this year, cremating an average of 70 to 80 pets per month and generating sales of approximately 14 million won. In particular, Mr. A was found to have operated two animal carcass incinerators (incineration capacity 25kg/hr), which are air pollutant emission facilities, without notifying the competent authorities.
Under the current "Animal Protection Act," anyone intending to engage in animal production, import, sales, or funeral services must obtain permission from the competent authority. Violations are punishable by imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine of up to 20 million won. Additionally, failure to register with the competent authority can result in imprisonment of up to 1 year or a fine of up to 10 million won.
Furthermore, the "Air Quality Preservation Act" stipulates that anyone who installs emission facilities or operates using such facilities without notification shall be subject to imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to 50 million won.
Meanwhile, the province’s Special Judicial Police Unit plans to crack down on illegal activities at animal-related businesses such as pet shops in the second half of this year.
