HJ Heavy Industries' construction division announced on the 18th that it has been selected as the qualified bidder for the detailed design of the 'Saemangeum International Airport Construction Project,' commissioned by the Seoul Regional Aviation Administration of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Saemangeum International Airport is a project aimed to open in 2029. This construction involves building the runway, apron, control tower, and navigation safety facilities, with a construction cost of approximately 560 billion KRW. HJ Heavy Industries, as the lead consortium member holding a 35% stake, teamed up with Daewoo E&C, Kolon Global, KCC Construction, and Shinseong Construction to secure the status of qualified bidder for the detailed design.
HJ Heavy Industries received the highest score in last month's design review evaluation, increasing its chances of winning the contract. It is reported that the company earned high marks by designing to minimize residual ground subsidence and ensure safety against natural disasters caused by abnormal weather. The plan to operate a 'non-stop airport' was also highly praised. The Seoul Regional Aviation Administration decided on the qualified bidder for the detailed design by combining the results of the design review evaluation and the subsequent price evaluation.
Since starting with Gimpo International Airport in 1971, HJ Heavy Industries has the largest record of domestic airport construction projects to date. It has played a leading role in the construction of 13 out of 16 domestic airports.
An HJ Heavy Industries official stated, "This achievement was possible because we possess the technology and track record to handle all areas required in airport construction, including dredging and reclamation, runways, terminals, infrastructure, and maintenance," adding, "We will successfully lead the Saemangeum International Airport construction project based on our know-how."
