A giant metal pillar has been discovered once again in the desert north of Las Vegas, USA. This pillar is similar to the so-called 'Monolith' metal structures recently found around the world. However, it is still unknown who installed it and for what purpose.

On the 18th, ABC News reported that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department discovered a long metal pillar that is estimated to have appeared over the weekend on a hiking trail near Gas Peak in the northern Las Vegas area. The metal pillar in the photo was aligned in a straight line with the horizon, reflecting the surrounding desert. This is similar to the metal pillar that appeared in downtown Las Vegas in December 2020. The Las Vegas Police Department humorously shared summer hiking safety tips, saying, "How did they carry (this pillar) all the way up here?" and "While online detectives solve the mystery of the metal pillar, we need to remember hiking safety rules."

This metal pillar is called a Monolith because it resembles the mysterious black slab 'Monolith' featured in Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi film '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968). It has become a major topic worldwide since about four years ago. The Monolith was first discovered in November 2020 in the deserts of Utah and California, USA. These two structures are known to be works by an artist group called 'The Most Famous Artist.' The Monolith installed in Utah disappeared mysteriously just nine days after its discovery, which drew even more attention. A similar structure found in a field near the G?bekli Tepe archaeological site in Turkey, home to humanity's oldest temple, in 2021 was revealed to be a promotional installation ahead of the Turkish government's space program announcement.
Besides the aforementioned cases, similar structures were also spotted in Romania and Ukraine in 2020, and Monoliths appeared on the Isle of Wight and Cornwall in the UK. One Monolith found in Somerset, UK, bore the phrase "Not Banksy." Banksy is a contemporary artist famous for installing works criticizing modern society in various urban locations. This phrase seems to be a rebuttal to suspicions that the Monolith might be one of Banksy's works.

Although the installer and purpose remain unknown, the steady discovery of Monoliths worldwide has sparked various speculations online. Some conspiracy theories even claim, "It is the work of aliens." However, a witness who saw a Monolith in Wales, UK, in March said, "When I got closer, it was at least 3 meters tall and triangular in shape," adding, "It was made of stainless steel, hollow inside, and seemed quite light. It was light enough for two people to carry and plant into the ground."
While many netizens speculate about the identity of the Monolith and consider it an interesting topic, some criticism has emerged regarding illegal installation and environmental damage. Compared to the past, reactions to these installations are not very favorable.
