Living in a Single Room with Older Brother and Mother
Working Delivery Jobs to Earn Rent Before Going to Work
A tragic accident occurred in which a man in his 20s, who was about to start his first job after being discharged from the military, was hit and killed by a taxi making an illegal U-turn while working as a delivery driver to support his family. On the 17th, JTBC reported on a traffic accident between a taxi and a motorcycle that took place on the 23rd of last month on a road in Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. At the time, the motorcycle collided with the passenger door of the taxi that was making an illegal U-turn, and the motorcycle driver, Mr. A (22), was taken to the hospital for treatment but ultimately passed away four days later.

Mr. A, who lived with his mother in a small one-room apartment, was on his way home after completing a delivery job that paid 3,500 won per order. He was effectively the head of the household, earning money through delivery work on behalf of his mother, who was a basic livelihood security recipient, and his brother, who was seeking employment. After his parents divorced during his childhood, Mr. A and his brother moved between relatives’ homes and orphanages, and only after becoming an adult did he live with his mother. After returning from military service, Mr. A immediately found a job at a small company, but when he did not receive his salary properly, he resigned at the end of February and had secured another job this month.
Although only a short time remained before starting his new job, he began working nonstop in delivery to pay the rent for the one-room apartment. According to his brother, Mr. A often said, “If I study, I’m just a burden,” and “I want to succeed quickly and buy a house for my mother.” The bereaved family demanded strict punishment, stating that the taxi driver did not even properly apologize once. The police have booked the taxi driver in his 60s without detention on charges of violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
