Accepting Slate Disposal Applications Until the End of August
Priority Support for Vulnerable Groups Including Basic Livelihood Security Recipients, Near-Poor, and Single-Parent Families
Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is providing financial support for the removal of aging asbestos slate roofs to protect residents' health and create a pleasant living environment.
Asbestos slate, known for its durability, excellent electrical insulation, and low cost, was widely used as a construction material for roofs and walls of houses in the past. However, asbestos is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen that causes lung cancer, asbestosis, and malignant mesothelioma when inhaled, and has been managed as designated waste since 2008.
The district has been steadily implementing asbestos slate maintenance projects since 2012.
The support includes ▲ costs for dismantling, removal, transportation, and disposal of slate ▲ roof improvement costs (applicable only to houses) ▲ separation costs for slate and building materials. This year, two buildings will be selected to receive up to 3.52 million KRW in support. Any additional costs exceeding the support amount must be borne by the applicant.
The application period is until the end of August, and applicants must be owners of buildings with asbestos slate roofs. Applications can be submitted by visiting or mailing the Environmental Division of Gwangjin-gu Office with the required documents. Buildings that have previously received support from similar projects are not eligible for duplicate support, and unauthorized buildings or buildings in planned development areas are also excluded.
The selection process involves document screening to assess eligibility, followed by evaluation based on area, aging degree, and other criteria, with selections made in September. Priority support is given to vulnerable groups such as basic livelihood security recipients, low-income households, and single-parent families. For more details, contact the Environmental Division of Gwangjin-gu Office.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, “We hope this support will enable residents to live in a safer environment,” and added, “We will continue to develop various customized projects to protect residents' health and lead efforts to improve the living environment.”
