ESG Travel Campaign 'Eco-Friendly Project Jupzen'
Jeju Island, Held Around Marado on the 15th
Leading Eco-Friendly Jeju Travel Culture
An eco-friendly travel project that goes beyond enjoying travel to leading local environmental cleanup was carried out in Jeju.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Jeju Tourism Association announced on the 17th that the second round of the ESG travel culture campaign, ‘Eco-friendly Project Jupzen,’ was held on Marado, the southernmost island of South Korea.
Jupzen (JEN: Jeju Eco-friendly Network) is a campaign launched in 2021 to foster a healthy travel culture. It is a project that contributes to environmental conservation practices in daily life and travel through voluntary participation of residents and travelers and dissemination via SNS.
This event was held with special sponsorship from the ‘Marado Passenger Ferry,’ where about 100 residents, travelers, and various participants including influencer Jeju Mini visited Marado and participated in the program.
Recruitment of participants was conducted through SNS, and the quota was filled within 30 minutes, showing high public interest. Since the event was held on the subsidiary island Marado, the organizers explained that thorough safety management, including deployment of safety personnel, was ensured.
Considering the island’s characteristic of accumulating marine debris, the campaign focused on environmental cleanup activities mainly along the coastline. In addition, traveling around Marado and tasting local specialties helped increase understanding of the region, receiving great response.
In particular, with support from the Marado Cooperative, participants tasted the local specialty Bangpung Makgeolli, focusing on creating a healthy travel culture of coexistence through special experiences and consumption activities with Marado residents.
A representative from the Tourism Association said, "We will continue to build a sustainable tourism culture together with local tourism businesses, residents, and travelers through the eco-friendly project ‘Jupzen’ and strive to promote ESG travel culture."
This year, ‘Jupzen’ plans to be held monthly with domestic and international companies that have agreed to participate in leading eco-friendly travel culture. Following the June event with the ‘Marado Passenger Ferry,’ in July, they plan to carry out coastal cleanup activities along with program and experience events reflecting the identity of the global brand ‘GoPro.’
