K-Musical 'The Great Gatsby' Wins Tony Award for 'Best Costume Design'

Broadway musical "The Great Gatsby," produced by Shin Chunsu, CEO of production company Odi Company, won the 'Best Costume Design' award in the musical category at the 77th Tony Awards held on the 16th (local time) at the Lincoln Center in New York.


The Tony Awards are the most prestigious awards ceremony in the U.S. performing arts sector. "The Great Gatsby" also won the 'Outstanding Set Design' award at the 68th Drama Desk Awards held on the 10th.

Producer Shin Chunsu expressed, "I am very pleased that the musical 'The Great Gatsby' won the 'Best Costume Design' award at the Tony Awards," adding, "Linda Cho, who was in charge of costume design, added her own interpretation to stylishly and elegantly recreate the 1920s costumes. Thanks to this, the audience can instantly immerse themselves in Gatsby's world and enjoy it together."


As the sole Lead Producer of "The Great Gatsby," CEO Shin Chunsu led the overall production of the musical, which involved a pre-production budget of $25 million (approximately 33 billion KRW).


"The Great Gatsby" officially opened at the Broadway Theatre on April 25. According to Playbill, a Broadway box office tracking site, as of the 9th, the weekly revenue reached $1.17 million, surpassing $1 million in weekly sales for seven consecutive weeks since opening, continuing its successful run. "The Great Gatsby" is currently running open-ended without a set closing date.


Producer Shin Chunsu stated, "The success potential shown by the musical 'The Great Gatsby' is expected to inspire hope and courage in many domestic musical producers preparing for overseas expansion," and expressed his ambition, "I want to be a stepping stone to globally expand the K-musical market."

"The Great Gatsby" is a newly adapted work based on the classic American novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It portrays a story full of human dreams, love, and desire through diverse characters reflecting the roaring 1920s era. CEO Shin Chunsu is leading this Broadway musical as the first Korean and Asian sole Lead Producer.


"The Great Gatsby" also swept nine categories, including 'Best Production,' 'Best Script,' 'Best Music,' 'Best Direction,' 'Best Set Design,' 'Best Costume Design,' and 'Best Actor,' out of 19 categories at the 21st Theatre Fans Choice Awards, which are decided solely by audience votes.
