Expanding Territorial Sovereignty Education Globally

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education will distribute the "Dokdo (Grade 4·5)" textbooks, published by the Gyeongbuk Educational Research Institute, to overseas Korean schools in June to strengthen the love for Dokdo and the will to protect it.

The textbooks will be distributed to five schools: Singapore Korean International School, Jakarta Korean International School, Bangkok Korean International School, Philippine Korean International School, and Malaysia Korean School, with 400 copies for 4th grade and 400 copies for 5th grade, totaling 800 copies.

Gyeongbuk Office of Education Distributes 800 'Dokdo Textbooks' to 5 Overseas Korean Schools A Dokdo textbook for 5th grade elementary students, self-published by the Gyeongbuk Office of Education.

This distribution of Dokdo textbooks to overseas Korean schools was promoted to expand territorial sovereignty education for future generations from the national level to the global stage.

The Gyeongbuk Educational Research Institute develops and supplies the "Dokdo" textbooks every year for 4th and 5th grade elementary school students.

The 4th grade textbook covers Dokdo's geography, environment, ecology, changes in its name, historical documents such as maps, the people living on Dokdo, and the efforts of the government and local authorities. The 5th grade textbook includes the origin and resources of Dokdo, preservation and development, historical records, and rebuttals to false claims about Dokdo.

The textbooks consist of 20 lessons per grade, with the final unit titled "Love for Dokdo! I Will Take the Lead," designed to encourage students to actively participate in activities that demonstrate their love for Dokdo.

For 4th to 6th grade elementary students, 10 lessons per year are mandatory through creative experiential activities and curriculum integration, while for 1st to 3rd graders, more than 10 hours of instruction is recommended.

In March, the Gyeongbuk Office of Education collaborated with the Jeju Office of Education to distribute around 1,700 copies of the "Dokdo" textbook to elementary schools in Jeju Island.

Lim Jongshik, Superintendent of Gyeongbuk Office of Education, said, "The Dokdo textbook developed for Dokdo education is expected to be of great help in the field at overseas Korean schools," adding, "We will continue to actively support students at overseas Korean schools so that they can grow into future talents with a correct sense of protection for Dokdo and a proper historical perspective."
