Samsung Electronics-Seoul National University Establish 'AI Joint Research Center'

Purpose of Strengthening AI Technology Competitiveness and Talent Development

Samsung Electronics is establishing an 'AI Joint Research Center' with Seoul National University to secure competitiveness in AI technology and products and to cultivate talent, promoting industry-academia cooperation.

On the 17th, Samsung Electronics and Seoul National University signed a business agreement to establish the 'AI Joint Research Center' at the Seoul National University Global Engineering Education Center in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.


Attending the signing ceremony were Jeon Kyung-hoon, President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Samsung Electronics' DX Division and Head of Samsung Research; Kim Dae-hyun, Vice President and Head of Samsung Research Global AI Center; Kim Young-ho, Dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University; and Kang Yoo, Assistant Professor of the Cooperative AI Major in the Graduate School of Engineering.


Seoul National University established the 'Cooperative AI Major' in the Graduate School of Engineering in 2020 with the goal of nurturing AI talent. Samsung Electronics' DX Division will collaborate with Seoul National University's Cooperative AI Major to conduct industry-academia joint research projects in the latest AI technology fields over the next three years. The research will focus on securing detailed technologies for On-Device AI and Multi-Modal AI, among others.


Samsung Electronics expects that through this collaboration, it will be able to secure core technologies in the rapidly evolving AI field and strengthen its product technology competitiveness. Recruitment-linked activities to nurture and secure outstanding talent will also be conducted for master's and doctoral researchers participating in the projects. The company is currently expanding AI-applied products not only in smartphones (Galaxy S24) but also in the home appliance sector.


President Jeon Kyung-hoon said, "Through the agreement to establish the AI Joint Research Center between Seoul National University and Samsung Electronics, we expect to solidify Samsung Electronics' competitiveness in AI technology and products and secure outstanding talent in future AI research fields."


Dean Kim Young-ho said, "Seoul National University and Samsung Electronics will actively cooperate to ensure that the agreement is faithfully implemented to achieve mutual goals," adding, "We hope to maintain a close cooperative relationship with Samsung Electronics not only in the AI field but also in various other areas."
