Yongsan-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Hee-young) will operate the "2024 Summer Vacation Children's English Camp" in collaboration with the TESOL program at Sookmyung Women's University Graduate School of Specialized Studies starting July 22.
This summer vacation English camp will run as follows: ▲ Grades 1-2 of elementary school from July 29 to August 9 for 2 weeks (excluding weekends, 6 hours per day) ▲ Grades 3-6 of elementary school from July 22 to August 9 for 3 weeks (excluding weekends, 7 hours per day).
The camp will be conducted by Sookmyung Women's University TESOL, a specialized English education institution, with a focus on science. It will be an experiential program where participants are naturally exposed to English through various activities such as practice and team projects with native speakers.
The recruitment target is a total of 140 students registered as residents of Yongsan-gu as of the application date: 20 students in grades 1-2 (including 3 from low-income families) and 120 students in grades 3-6 (including 18 from low-income families). However, foreigners, overseas Koreans, and foreign nationals are excluded.
Applications will be accepted online through the Yongsan-gu Education Comprehensive Portal from 10 a.m. on the 17th of this month until 4 p.m. on the 26th. Participants will be selected by lottery and announced with individual notifications at 2 p.m. on July 2.
The participation fee is 840,000 KRW per person for grades 1-2 and 1,300,000 KRW per person for grades 3-6, but the district supports half of the cost, making it ▲ 420,000 KRW for grades 1-2 ▲ 650,000 KRW for grades 3-6.
Additionally, families with multiple children (two or more) will receive an extra 100,000 KRW. Furthermore, the district will fully support those who are basic livelihood security recipients, near-poverty class, or low-income single-parent families.
So far, the English camp has been well received by students and parents as a program that provides high-quality English education while reducing the burden of private education expenses.
Accordingly, the district will expand the program this year to guarantee participation opportunities for more students.
Previously, the children's English camp was conducted for grades 3-6 over 2 weeks. Starting this year, a class for grades 1-2 has been newly established, and the existing grades 3-6 class period has been extended from 2 weeks to 3 weeks.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "I hope this English camp with native speakers will be an opportunity for students to develop interest and confidence in English," and added, "We will continue to actively support programs that reduce educational disparities and alleviate the burden of private education expenses."
