Thought to be ignored, stabbed over 100 times with a weapon
A man in his 50s who brutally murdered a village chief, who had shown him kindness, with a weapon after feeling ignored was sentenced to life imprisonment in the appellate court, increasing his original sentence.
According to Yonhap News, the Criminal Division 2 of the Changwon Branch of the Busan High Court (Presiding Judge Heo Yang-yoon) overturned the original sentence of 30 years imprisonment for 50-year-old Mr. A, who was charged with murder, and sentenced him to life imprisonment on the 14th. Previously, the first trial court sentenced Mr. A to 30 years in prison in December last year. The prosecution appealed on the grounds that the sentence was too light, while Mr. A appealed claiming the sentence was too harsh.
It was revealed that Mr. B had compassionately cared for Mr. A, who was raising his son alone, by helping Mr. A’s son receive public support and preparing side dishes for them. Later, Mr. A suddenly hugged Mr. B from behind or entered Mr. B’s yard without permission. When Mr. B tried to avoid contact, Mr. A thought he was being ignored and committed the crime. It is known that Mr. A swung a weapon at Mr. B more than 100 times.
On the day of the incident, after an argument with Mr. B, Mr. A brought a weapon from his residence and committed the crime. Immediately after the crime, Mr. A fled to a nearby mountain but surrendered about two hours later when the police, responding to a report from a local resident, closed in on him. It is reported that he was punished for assaulting a fellow inmate while in custody for this case.
The court stated, “Looking at Mr. A’s various criminal records, he shows a tendency to respond violently in situations where he is angry or dissatisfied, and the risk of reoffending with violent crimes is assessed to be high, indicating a very high risk of committing murder again.” The court added, “Given Mr. A’s antisocial behavior, violence, and extremely high risk of reoffending, it is difficult to see that the original sentence of a fixed-term imprisonment adequately reflects the degree of criminal responsibility for Mr. A’s guilt,” explaining the reason for the sentencing.
