The Seo-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City has called for the establishment of safety measures as residents continue to suffer damages near the construction site of Urban Railway Line 2.
On the 14th, according to the Seo-gu Council, all council members submitted a proposal demanding the ‘implementation of a safety diagnosis service for the construction section’ and the ‘preparation of safety measures to prevent additional damages.’
Recently, near the Urban Railway Line 2 construction site in the Geumho-dong area of Seo-gu, incidents such as ground subsidence in apartment parking lots and cracks on building exterior walls and interior corridors have continued. The Gwangju Metropolitan City acknowledged through technical consultation that groundwater leakage during the excavation process of the urban railway construction contributed to the ground subsidence. However, they stated that the degree of ground tilting is below the standard threshold and poses no safety issues, and that measurement devices will be checked regularly.
Councilor Ahn Hyeong-ju, who spearheaded the proposal, pointed out, “In 2021, a structural collapse accident occurred in a residential area adjacent to the Urban Railway Line 2 construction site. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the accident happened despite the vibration levels caused by blasting operations being measured below the standard threshold during construction.”
He added, “Simply inspecting the measurement devices cannot prevent accidents, and measures need to be prepared to an excessive degree if necessary. To ensure that safety accidents never occur again, we must prepare countermeasures to realize a ‘Safe City Gwangju’ and a ‘Safe Seo-gu by My Side.’”
