Mokpo Coast Guard Urgently Arrests Hong Kong-Registered Crew Member for Capsizing Accident Cause

Aggravated Punishment Act Charges for Specific Crimes
Additional Related Persons Also Under Investigation

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) urgently arrested two crew members on the 14th, stating that the cause of the capsizing accident of the Je 307 Pungseongho that occurred on the sea near Gageodo, Sinan-gun on the 13th lies with Vessel A (9,734t, Hong Kong-registered, container ship, 19 crew members).


According to Mokpo Maritime Police, they are under investigation on charges of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, and investigations will continue on additional related parties.

The Maritime Police are making every effort to find the two missing persons in cooperation with the Navy, related agencies, and civilian vessels. In particular, 11 ships are scheduled to be deployed for search operations on the 14th.


The capsized Je 307 Pungseongho was towed by a civilian vessel and moored at Gageodo Port. A crane has been introduced for restoration work to return the ship to its original state, after which an internal search of the ship will be conducted.


To minimize casualties caused by the maritime accident and to clearly identify the cause of the accident, Mokpo Maritime Police are doing their best for a swift resolution.


Mokpo Maritime Police are also focusing on preparing measures to prevent future accidents related to this incident.
