Geumcheon-gu Provides 'Digital Storage Media Destruction Service'
From June 17, targeting digital storage media such as mobile phones, hard disks, SSDs, USBs
Supports physical destruction using dedicated shredders to prevent personal information leaks

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that starting June 17, it will provide a free 'Digital Storage Media Destruction Service' for residents and local workers.

This service was established to prevent the leakage of personal and other important information that may occur during the disposal of digital storage media such as mobile phones, computer hard drives, and USBs.

The 'Digital Storage Media Destruction Service' physically destroys digital storage media using a hard drive destruction device.

Residents or workers who wish to use the service can bring the storage media to be destroyed and apply in person at the Information and Communication Office (8th floor) of the district office.

The storage media eligible for destruction service include mobile phones, hard drives and SSDs for personal computers and laptops, and USBs; server hard drives are excluded from the service. Devices containing batteries, such as mobile phones, must have the batteries removed before visiting due to fire risk during destruction.

An official in charge will verify whether the device can be destroyed and then, in the presence of the applicant, destroy the storage media using the destruction device.

To specify its personal information protection policy, the district established the 'Ordinance on Personal Information Protection of Geumcheon-gu, Seoul' in May this year. It also strives to ensure the safe management of personal information through managing the status of third-party personal information provision, comprehensive maintenance of personal information files, and regular personal information protection training for all employees.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "The Digital Storage Media Destruction Service is a representative administrative innovation case that improves the overall quality of Geumcheon-gu civil services through a small change in thinking," and added, "We will continue to actively introduce and utilize various systems to provide high-quality administrative services that residents can feel."
