Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) held a 'Barley Harvesting Event' on the 13th at the Lawn Yard of the Knowledge Flower Garden in Jeonnong-dong.

This event was organized to provide local children with an opportunity to experience the value of nature and the joy of harvest by experiencing barley harvesting in celebration of Mangjong (芒種), the ninth of the 24 solar terms.

'Mangjong (芒種)' means the appropriate time to sow seeds of awned grains like rice, and it is the suitable solar term for rice planting and barley cutting.

The district planted 33,120 young barley plants last November in the 'Knowledge Flower Garden,' a flower garden created on the site of the Seoul Metropolitan Library (Dongdaemun).

After winter, the young barley showed off its yellow ripened appearance under the early summer sun.

On the 13th, children gathered at the lawn yard along with Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun-gu cut the barley and threshed the grains using a flail and a winnowing basket.

On one side of the lawn yard where threshing was in full swing, they made flutes from barley stalks and played cheerful tunes, fully enjoying the joy of harvest.

A district official said, "The grains threshed from the barley ears will be put into zipper bags and shared with residents," adding, "We will prepare various hands-on experiences to directly feel nature and create 'Dongdaemun-gu, the City of Flowers,' where people live in harmony with nature."
