Caught Thanks to GPS Installed for Theft Prevention
Police Advice After Responding to Theft Report Last Month
As the honey harvesting season from May to July begins, reports of beehive thefts have been increasing, and in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, a thief who stole a beehive was tracked down by the GPS (Global Positioning System) installed inside the beehive.
On the 13th, Yonhap News reported that the Hongcheon Police Station is investigating a man in his 60s, Mr. A, on suspicion of theft. Mr. A is accused of stealing a wooden beehive from a mountain near the Hongcheon River in Namnoil-ri, Nam-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, around 3 a.m. on the 11th, and carrying it about 2 km to his residence.
The owner of the beehive, a beekeeper in his 70s, Mr. B, realized the theft around 11 a.m. the previous day and reported it to the police. Fortunately, Mr. B had previously placed a GPS device inside the beehive, and the police tracked the beehive’s location by following the GPS signal. The police arrested Mr. A based on the loud GPS alert near his house and the discovery of several beehives around his residence.
According to the police investigation, Mr. A was also confirmed to have stolen beehives from Mr. B’s apiary last month. Earlier, at around 4 p.m. on the 27th of last month, police officers from the Nam-myeon Police Substation, who responded to Mr. B’s report, advised attaching GPS devices to some beehives to prevent theft, and Mr. B agreed to this. The police are investigating the detailed circumstances of the case.
