Gyeonggi Province will conduct a special inspection of the upper Paldang Lake area for four months until September 29 to prevent green algae in Paldang Lake, the water source for residents of the Seoul metropolitan area.
The special inspection targets wastewater discharge facilities, private sewage treatment facilities, and livestock manure discharge facilities located in seven cities and counties in the upper Paldang Lake area: Gapyeong-gun, Gwangju-si, Namyangju-si, Yangpyeong-gun, Yeoju-si, Yongin-si, and Icheon-si.
In particular, non-point source pollution reduction facilities, which reduce pollutants discharged from roads and construction sites, as well as public treatment facilities, will also be inspected.
Gyeonggi Province will patrol major rivers to implement preventive measures against green algae outbreaks, including removing harmful aquatic plants, collecting trash from tributaries flowing into Paldang Lake and waterfront areas, and cracking down on pollution activities.
Additionally, the province plans to use vessels to identify green algae outbreak areas, strengthen management of water pollution sources, and enhance the water purification process at water treatment plants.
Yoon Deok-hee, head of the Gyeonggi Provincial Water Resources Headquarters, stated, "This year’s temperature and precipitation are forecasted to be higher than average, and the heatwave period is expected to arrive earlier, so we plan to prepare more thoroughly for green algae," adding, "We will strive to minimize green algae outbreaks."
