Hydrogen Truck by Hyundai with Zero Carbon Emissions Reaches 10 Million km Milestone

Hyundai Hydrogen Electric Truck Drives 10 Million km in Switzerland
Reduces Carbon Emissions Equivalent to Absorption by 70 Pine Trees
Effect Comparable to Creating a Pine Forest the Size of 700 Soccer Fields

Hyundai Motor Company's Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck has surpassed a cumulative driving distance of 10 million kilometers. This achievement was reached 3 years and 8 months after the world's first mass-produced large hydrogen fuel cell truck began its first operation in Switzerland in October 2020. This is being recognized as proof of Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell technology and reliability.

According to Hyundai on the 12th, a total of 48 Xcient hydrogen fuel cell trucks are currently operating in Switzerland. They are equipped with a 180 kW-class hydrogen fuel cell system composed of two hydrogen fuel cells and a 350 kW-class driving motor with maximum output. They can travel up to 400 km on a single charge.

Hydrogen Truck by Hyundai with Zero Carbon Emissions Reaches 10 Million km Milestone

While conventional diesel commercial trucks emit about 6,300 tons of carbon dioxide after driving 10 million kilometers, the Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck emits only pure water during driving. The carbon reduction effect of the Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck is equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed annually by approximately 700,000 30-year-old pine trees. This is the same as creating a pine forest about the size of 700 soccer fields (508 hectares).

In particular, the Xcient hydrogen fuel cell trucks operating in Switzerland use only 'green hydrogen' as fuel, which generates no carbon during production, making this significant. With the achievement of the cumulative driving distance of 10 million kilometers, Hyundai was able to collect vehicle data centered on the driving experience and feedback from actual drivers.

It is expected that this data will play a major role in advancing the hydrogen fuel cell system to be released in the future. Hyundai continuously analyzes vehicle data including driving distance, hydrogen consumption, and fuel cell performance through the operation of the Xcient hydrogen fuel cell trucks.

Meanwhile, Hyundai is also strengthening the creation of the North American hydrogen ecosystem by participating in the 'California Port Green Truck Introduction Project' in the United States. It supplied 30 hydrogen fuel cell trucks, the largest single supply to a North American transportation company, in the second half of last year. The model supplied by Hyundai to the North American transportation company is a large truck developed to suit the characteristics of regions with long-distance driving. It is equipped with a 180 kW-class hydrogen fuel cell system and a 350 kW-class driving motor with maximum output, capable of traveling over 720 km on a single charge under maximum load.

Jang Jae-hoon, President of Hyundai Motor Company, said at this year’s CES, "All of Hyundai’s technological advancements are aimed at enriching human life," and added, "We will accelerate the realization of a hydrogen society where clean hydrogen is used as energy for everyone, for everything, and can be utilized anywhere."
