On the morning of the 11th, President Yoon Suk-yeol, during his state visit to Turkmenistan, met with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the Supreme Leader and Chairman of the People's Council, and exchanged views on ways to strengthen friendly cooperation between the two countries, the presidential office announced.

Supreme Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow is the father of the current President Serdar Berdimuhamedow and a former president.

President Yoon expressed his pleasure at meeting Supreme Leader Berdimuhamedow again since his visit to Korea in November 2022 as the Chairman of the Senate, and conveyed his happiness that under the Supreme Leader's special interest and affection for Korea, bilateral relations have achieved remarkable development.

In particular, President Yoon evaluated that the 'Galkynysh Gas Field Phase 1 Desulfurization Facility' project and the 'Kiyanly Polymer Plant' project, which began during Supreme Leader Berdimuhamedow's presidency, have become representative examples of cooperation between the two countries.

He also requested the Supreme Leader and the Turkmenistan government’s special attention to ensure that the recently signed 'Galkynysh Gas Field Phase 4 Desulfurization Facility Basic Agreement' and the 'Kiyanly Polymer Plant Normalization Phase 2 Cooperation Agreement' lead to a 'win-win' outcome beneficial to both countries.

Supreme Leader Berdimuhamedow acknowledged that Korean companies with world-class technology have contributed to Turkmenistan’s economic development, including in the energy and plant sectors, and expressed hope that cooperation will continue in the future. He also mentioned his conviction that President Yoon’s current state visit marks an important milestone for the development of comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in politics, economy, and culture.

Following this, President Yoon and the Supreme Leader engaged in in-depth discussions at the highest level for the successful implementation of the two agreements mentioned above, and candidly discussed additional cooperation measures beyond the projects under these agreements, the presidential office reported.

After the meeting between President Yoon and the Supreme Leader, President Yoon and his spouse and Supreme Leader Berdimuhamedow and his spouse held a friendly luncheon, during which they strengthened their friendship through conversations on various topics including health cooperation, Korean language education, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Supreme Leader Berdimuhamedow noted that the popularity of Korean Wave (Hallyu) is increasing in Turkmenistan and that the number of trainees learning Taekwondo is also rising. President Yoon responded by expressing his hope that cultural and human exchanges will serve as a catalyst to more strongly connect the future generations of both countries.
