The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province is conducting background checks on criminal records related to sex crimes and child abuse for workers at local daycare centers to create a safe childcare environment.
On the 10th, Suwon City announced that by the 28th of this month, it will carry out criminal record checks on more than 7,000 individuals working at 728 daycare centers in the Suwon area, including installers and operators, childcare staff, special activity instructors, childcare trainees, drivers, cleaning personnel, and public service workers.
Suwon City will verify sex crime and child abuse-related criminal records for these individuals and also investigate whether they fall under employment restriction categories. If violations are found, the city will check whether the operators conducted criminal record inquiries before hiring and, if necessary, will conduct on-site inspections as well.
If an operator fails to conduct criminal record checks for sex crimes or child abuse, a fine of up to 5 million KRW will be imposed. Additionally, if the operator unjustifiably refuses to dismiss a person with a sex crime or child abuse record or fails to do so within one month, a fine of up to 10 million KRW will be imposed.
A Suwon City official stated, "This measure is to proactively block the risk of children being exposed to sex crimes and child abuse," and added, "We will strive to create a trustworthy and safe childcare environment."
