Next-Generation Technologies to Enhance Data Center Operational Efficiency
Fabless semiconductor design company Pado announced on the 10th that it has formed a partnership with U.S. storage company Western Digital to jointly develop 'FDP (Flexible Data Placement),' a next-generation technology used in enterprise solid-state drives (SSD).
SSD is a large-capacity storage device based on NAND flash used in data centers. Applying FDP technology to SSDs restructures the data recording method in a new way, improving SSD performance as well as extending its lifespan. FDP achieves this effect by reducing the 'Write Amplification' phenomenon, where more data than actual customer data is recorded, which shortens SSD lifespan and performance.
FDP is a technology proposed as a standard by the OCP (Open Compute Project), where big tech companies gather to discuss next-generation data center standards. After being proposed by Meta, other big tech companies such as Google have eagerly adopted it. Pado explained that it is regarded as an important technology in ultra-large data center environments where massive amounts of data are transmitted.
Ji-hyo Lee, CEO of Pado, said, "Through FDP technology, data placement in SSD storage space can be optimized, which is a very significant achievement in the field of storage technology," adding, "Through the partnership with Western Digital, we will supply storage solutions implementing top-level FDP technology."
