"Pohang's New Future with Citizens"... Pohang Citizens' Day Ceremony Successfully Held

A Gathering of Citizens Including Youth, Young Adults, Workers, and People with Disabilities

Performance Expressing Hopes for Electronics, Bio, and Energy Leadership Draws Attention

Mayor Lee Kangdeok Says, "Citizens Will Join the Great Journey Toward the Future"

Pohang City held the ‘2024 Pohang Citizens’ Day Commemoration Ceremony’ and the ‘28th Pohang Danojeol Folk Festival’ at the lawn field next to Manindang on the 8th to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its elevation to city status.

"Pohang's New Future with Citizens"... Pohang Citizens' Day Ceremony Successfully Held Pohang City, celebrating the 75th anniversary of its city status, held the "Pohang Citizens' Day Ceremony" and the "28th Pohang Dano Festival" at the lawn field next to Man-dang on the 8th.

The event was attended by Mayor Lee Kangdeok, City Council Chairman Baek Inkyu, National Assembly members Kim Jeongjae and Lee Sanghwi, Gyeongbuk Provincial Council Vice Chairman Park Yongseon, Cultural Center Director Park Seungdae, as well as various citizen representatives from different fields including youth, young adults, workers, and people with disabilities, who all came together in unity.


The ceremony began with the entry of the township and district banners, followed by the reading of the Citizens’ Charter by the Yeonorang and Saeonyeo couple, the Citizens’ Award presentation, the singing of the Citizens’ Song, a citizens’ unity performance, and a congratulatory performance by Ryu Yeonju, Pohang’s honorary ambassador who is from the region.


This year, the Pohang Citizens’ Award, which is given to those who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Pohang City and the creation of a bright and healthy civic society, was awarded to Han Dongseon, Director of Saemyeong Christian Hospital, and Kim Seonsik, Deputy General Manager of Pohang Steelworks.


Han Dongseon, Director of Saemyeong Christian Hospital, was recognized for his efforts to prevent the collapse of local healthcare and for his various activities with the community to innovate regional healthcare. Kim Seonsik, Deputy General Manager of Pohang Steelworks, was acknowledged for his significant contributions to social service, including helping to establish the POSCO Family Volunteer Group and promoting a culture of volunteering in the region.


In particular, the event featured a ‘Citizens’ Unity Performance’ with representatives of students, workers, people with disabilities, young adults, and women?citizens who are working for the future of the region?drawing special attention.


The performance, which began with the slogan ‘A New Future for Pohang Together with Citizens,’ reflected the hopes of citizens for new industries that Pohang City is focusing on, such as battery, bio, and energy sectors.


Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, “We will firmly establish the foundation for new growth industries such as battery, bio, and energy, secure global competitiveness, and make Pohang the central city of Korea. I hope that all Pohang citizens will join this great journey to create a new future for Pohang.”


Following the Pohang Citizens’ Day Commemoration Ceremony, the 28th Pohang Danojeol Folk Festival was held, featuring a variety of side events such as a tug-of-war competition, a Hanbok fashion contest, a singing contest, as well as workshops for making Dano fans, Changpo soap, and traditional games, once again fostering unity among citizens.


Pohang Citizens’ Day was designated as June 12 in 2004 to commemorate the opening of Pohang Port on June 12, 1962.
