39 Cases of Election Interference by Special Inspection Office Officials Detected... 65 Disciplined

Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'Special Inspection for the 22nd National Assembly Election'

A total of 39 cases, including violations of the prohibition on election involvement, were detected during a special inspection of public officials conducted in preparation for the general election in April this year.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 8th that a total of 39 legal and duty violations were detected in the "Special Inspection Results for the 22nd National Assembly Election" conducted from the end of December last year to April 9 of this year. Disciplinary actions were taken against 65 people, and 6,651,000 KRW was recovered. Three cases were referred for investigation, and one institution was warned.

Among them, 21 cases of violations of the prohibition on election involvement related to the general election were detected. According to the inspection results, a public official belonging to A-do directly invited a candidate for the National Assembly preliminary election to a specific meeting supporting the candidate in February this year and celebrated the primary victory with the attendees. A public official belonging to B-si violated the prohibition on election campaigning by posting a "request message to support a specific candidate" in a group KakaoTalk chatroom for the National Assembly preliminary candidate.

There were 8 cases of violations of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, including bribery, and 10 other duty violations. A public official belonging to C-si received a request from a city council member in November last year to select a specific company for facility repair work. Although the official instructed the person in charge to recruit review committee members, the project was arbitrarily canceled when the recommended company was not selected.

A public official belonging to D-si did not deduct the insurance amount when using a government vehicle. The official falsely recorded commuting times while conducting private affairs during overtime work and improperly received about 2 million KRW.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated, "We formed 49 joint inspection teams with 498 inspectors from cities and provinces to conduct election-related inspections and also inspected cases of lax public service discipline during the year-end and Lunar New Year holidays. We strongly responded by referring clear election interference acts to the prosecution and police for investigation, and strictly punished violations of election neutrality and lax public service discipline regardless of intent or negligence."
