"Victim's Side Earnestly Requests"
Complaint Filed for Defamation Charges
The YouTube channel Narak Storage, which sparked controversy over vigilante justice by exposing the identities of the perpetrators in the ‘Miryang Middle School Girl Group Sexual Assault’ case, has taken down all related videos.
On the 7th, Narak Storage posted on its channel community, “We had close discussions with the Miryang victims. There was a sincere request from the victims,” and “I have taken down all the videos I made related to Miryang.” They added, “Please also unsubscribe.” In the comments, they explained once again, “The victims do not want the (exposures).”
Previously, Narak Storage announced it would reveal all 44 perpetrators, claiming “permission was obtained from the victim’s family.” From the 1st to the 6th, they exposed the identities of a total of three perpetrators. As Narak Storage gained attention through vigilante justice, another YouTuber, Jeontu Tokki, joined in by revealing the identities of two more perpetrators.
However, during this process, an innocent person was mistakenly identified as a perpetrator and suffered damages. Mr. A, who runs a nail shop in Miryang, posted on an online mom caf?, stating, “I am not the girlfriend of Mr. B, who is mentioned in the Miryang sexual assault case,” and appealed, “Due to the ongoing witch hunt, my acquaintances and my business, which have nothing to do with this, are suffering great damage.”
As innocent victims emerged, the Korea Sexual Violence Counseling Center, one of the support organizations for the Miryang sexual assault victims, posted on social media (SNS), “The victims were completely unaware of this until Narak Storage posted the first video about the ‘Miryang Group Sexual Assault Case,’ and were never asked for prior consent,” adding, “After the video was uploaded, on June 3rd, a request was made to delete the video. There was no agreement to disclose all 44 identities.”
Earlier that day, the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced that five complaints had been filed for defamation related to YouTube videos that revealed the identities of the perpetrators in the ‘Miryang Sexual Assault Case.’ The complaints claim that the YouTube channels damaged reputations by disclosing personal identities without the consent of the parties involved.
