Strengthening On-Site Medical Response Capabilities During Disasters
The Department of Nursing at Dong-Eui University of Science and Technology (President: Kim Youngdo, Department Head: Kim Yoonji) recently participated in the '2024 Gori Nuclear Radiation Disaster Joint Drill' held at Gangseo Sports Park.
This drill, organized by the Busan Metropolitan Government, was a disaster response exercise simulating a radiation leak at the Gori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 4. Sixteen local governments in Busan and more than 60 institutions and organizations took part in the event.
The Department of Nursing at Dong-Eui University of Science and Technology was the first in the nation to have a large-scale participation of over 200 students in the joint radiation disaster drill. The students enhanced their on-site medical response capabilities during disasters, provided medical volunteer services to evacuees at the shelter set up in Gangseo Sports Park, and conducted CPR training.
During the drill, a medical booth was set up to provide various information related to first aid in the event of a radiation accident, receiving enthusiastic responses from residents and students participating in the drill. In addition, students who participated in the drill were given the opportunity to develop practical emergency response skills through CPR practice.
Notably, from this drill onward, emergency first aid training was added on the train, simulating the evacuation of evacuees by train. Disaster emergency response simulations were also conducted during transit, assuming real-life emergency situations that could frequently occur while moving to the shelter.
One student who participated in the drill said, "Through this drill, I realized how important it is for medical professionals to be prepared to respond to radiation accidents," adding, "I want to become a nursing professional who can contribute to the safety and health of the public during national disasters."
Kim Yoonji, head of the Department of Nursing, stated, "It was very helpful for students to participate directly in the drill and develop their preparedness and response capabilities for radiation accidents," adding, "We will continue to collaborate with the local community to provide various programs to enhance the disaster response capabilities of nursing students."
The Department of Nursing at Dong-Eui University of Science and Technology has been collaborating with the Busan Metropolitan Government since 2016 to foster safety and disaster response capabilities in prospective nurses, reflecting the lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear accident. The department is committed to strengthening on-site medical response capabilities for evacuees and promoting the safety and health of the local community.
Since its establishment in 2009, the department has earned four consecutive five-year accreditations, with the vision of becoming the top nursing department contributing to the promotion of future human health.
