Sungsimdang's 'Mango Siru' Explodes in Popularity... "Please Stand in Line Instead"

Job Posting on Danggeun Market: "Queue Standing Part-Time Job for 30,000 Won"

The bakery 'Sungsimdang' in Daejeon is gaining explosive popularity. There is even a part-time job advertised on the secondhand trading and job-seeking platform 'Danggeun Market' where people stand in line on behalf of others. On the morning of the 6th, a job posting titled 'Sungsimdang Mango Siru Line Standing Part-time Job' was uploaded in the Danggeun Market part-time job section. Mango Siru is a cake released by Sungsimdang, known for its striking visual of numerous mangoes piled high on top of a fresh cream cake, which had already become a hot topic even before its release.

The poster of the advertisement wrote, "Please stand in line for Sungsimdang Mango Siru," and added, "You only need to stand for about 40 minutes," offering 30,000 won as payment. This is more than three times the current minimum wage as compensation. It is reported that the transaction was completed in less than an hour after the posting was made.

As this post spread online, it became a hot topic among netizens. Comments such as "Sungsimdang has created a new type of job," "How hard must it be to get this that a line-standing part-time job exists," "At this point, it’s a specialty product that supports Daejeon’s economy," and "They absolutely must not close down" showed surprise and interest.

In fact, Mango Siru is said to be enjoying phenomenal popularity since its release. On social media platforms (SNS), photos of customers crowding even before the bakery opens are commonly seen. On YouTube and Instagram, famous influencers’ tasting reviews are being posted competitively.

The fact that it is a limited edition product seems to have intensified the competition. Mango Siru is a seasonal event food sold only during the summer by Sungsimdang, and it is reported that the daily prepared quantity before opening is about 200 pieces. Customers who want to purchase Mango Siru are given waiting tickets, and if the number exceeds 200, they have to wait for the next opportunity.

Meanwhile, Sungsimdang is recently in conflict with KORAIL Distribution over the rent of its Daejeon Station branch. Sungsimdang has been paying about 10 million won monthly in fees to KORAIL Distribution for the past five years, but after the contract expired, during the public bidding process, KORAIL proposed a minimum fee rate of 17% based on the average monthly sales of the stores, leading Sungsimdang to consider withdrawing.

As a bakery enjoying nationwide popularity, the conflict over Sungsimdang’s rent has become a topic even in political circles. On the 5th, Heo Eun-ah, leader of the Reform Party, stated at an on-site supreme council meeting held in the Daejeon Station conference room, "If even the great Sungsimdang suffers from rent issues, imagine the situation of small business owners," adding, "While KORAIL’s claim to equalize conditions with other stores is not entirely groundless, it is like killing the goose that lays the golden eggs by cutting it open."
