Goseong County in Gyeongnam held a Memorial Day ceremony at the Chungheon Tower Square in Namsan Park at 10 a.m. on the 6th to mark the 69th Memorial Day.

Goseong County Holds 69th Memorial Day Ceremony at Namsan Park Memorial Tower Lee Sanggeun, Governor of Goseong County, Gyeongnam, is delivering a greeting at the Memorial Day ceremony.

On this Memorial Day, over 400 people attended, including veterans, bereaved families of fallen soldiers, national merit recipients and their families, heads of veterans’ organizations, institutional and social organization leaders, soldiers, and students. They honored the spirit and achievements of 1,274 patriots from Goseong County enshrined at the Chungheon Tower, reflecting on the noble patriotism of those who devoted and sacrificed themselves for the country.

The ceremony began with a nationwide moment of silence at 10 a.m., accompanied by a siren and the sound of a rifle salute by soldiers from Army Unit 8358. The event continued with the offering of flowers and incense, a memorial address by Goseong County Mayor Lee Sanggeun, a recitation of a tribute poem by three members of the Gyeongnam Talent Poetry Recitation Association Goseong Branch, and the singing of the Memorial Day song together with the Goseong County Women’s Choir.

The Goseong-eup Red Cross Volunteer Society provided snacks for about 400 attendees, expressing gratitude to the families of veterans. Every year, the Goseong-eup Red Cross Volunteer Society prepares snack packages at their own expense for the families of veterans attending the Memorial Day ceremony, showing appreciation for their sacrifice for the nation.

Additionally, the Goseong County Veterans Association operated a shared vehicle (an 11-seater Carnival) from the entrance of Namsan Park to the Chungheon Tower Square for the convenience and safety of elderly attendees. Members of the Veterans Association’s Women’s Committee, Youth Committee, and the Goseong County Youth Nanugo Volunteer Group assisted the elderly and those with mobility difficulties to help with their movement.

In his memorial address, Mayor Lee Sanggeun stated, “We respect and honor those who sacrificed for our country. A living culture of honoring veterans in our daily lives is the driving force behind national development and is the responsibility of all of us. Although our county is implementing various policies to honor veterans, we are well aware that these efforts fall short compared to the dedication and sacrifice of veterans and their families. We will continue to do our utmost to ensure that those who sacrificed for the nation and their families are treated with the respect and support they deserve, so that the culture of honoring patriots may flourish.”

Meanwhile, in recognition of June as the Month of Patriots and Veterans, Goseong County provided an encouragement payment of 50,000 won to 1,012 veterans and their families.
