Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province will hold the Wangpicheon Pirami Festival on June 15 at Gulsan 3-ri Gulguji Mountain Village in Geunnam-myeon.
Gulguji Mountain Village is a remote area, with the clear Wangpicheon stream flowing in front and surrounded on all sides by Geumgang pine forests, making it one of Korea's most popular trekking destinations.
Traditionally, villagers would catch pirami (a type of minnow) using bamboo in the Wangpicheon stream in front of Gulguji Village, cook spicy fish stew by the stream, and enjoy traditional water games. This tradition was developed into a village festival through the Mountain Village Ecological Project in 2008.
The Wangpicheon Pirami Festival, initiated and organized by local residents, was selected as an outstanding rural festival by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and is also supported as a representative village-led festival by Uljin County.
The Pirami Festival is an event where families can cool off together in the summer, experience, enjoy, and connect with each other. It is a festival where both children and adults can return to their childhood and create joyful memories. The main programs include traditional pirami fishing with bamboo, a ritual for a bountiful harvest, treasure hunts, agricultural product auctions, and singing contests.
County Governor Son Byeongbok said, "With June marking the start of the summer vacation season, I hope everyone will wash away their stress and heat in the clear waters of Wangpicheon, breathe in the clean air of the surrounding Geumgang pine forests, and make wonderful memories."
