Gong Yeong-min, Goheung County Governor, Says 'Water for Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex Should Be Supplied via Regional Waterworks'

Proposal to Supply Metropolitan Waterworks for Stable Water Resources to the Ministry of Environment

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 4th that it visited the Ministry of Environment to propose that the ‘Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex’ being established in Bongnae-myeon be supplied with water through a wide-area water supply system to ensure its successful promotion and smooth supply of water required for the national industrial complex.

The daily water demand for the Gohung National Industrial Complex is about 1,800 tons, which cannot currently be supplied through the Yenae Water Purification Plant located in Bongnae-myeon. Accordingly, Gong Young-min, Governor of Gohung-gun, has emphasized the need to prepare water supply measures to ensure that production activities of resident companies are not disrupted by the time the national industrial complex is completed in 2030.

So far, Gohung-gun has been continuously consulting with related organizations such as the Korea Water Resources Corporation and has thoroughly reviewed three major plans for supplying water to the national industrial complex: first, utilizing local water sources and developing water sources; second, branching the wide-area water supply system from the Byeollyang Water Purification Plant system; and third, supplying desalinated seawater.

However, considering comprehensively the conditions of local water supply facilities and water sources, stability of water supply, economic feasibility of the project, fairness in fee burden, and maintenance aspects, the plan to branch the wide-area water supply system from the Byeollyang Water Purification Plant system was judged to be the most optimal.

On this day, Governor Gong Young-min explained to the Director-General of Water Management Policy at the Ministry of Environment the poor conditions of local water sources and the necessity of stable water supply through the wide-area water supply system, and requested the Ministry’s cooperation for the successful promotion of the Gohung National Industrial Complex, which is being developed on a scale of 520,000 pyeong.

The Ministry of Environment also responded, “Since the responsibility for supplying water to the national industrial complex lies with the state as well, we will actively cooperate with the Korea Water Resources Corporation to ensure the smooth progress of the Gohung National Industrial Complex.”

A county official stated, “In the future, in line with the completion of the industrial complex in 2030, we will closely examine not only the water supply issue but also related infrastructure construction plans such as power supply and the opening of access roads to the industrial complex to ensure smooth production activities of resident companies.”

Meanwhile, following the presidential directive of ‘actively promoting the exemption from preliminary feasibility study for the Gohung National Industrial Complex’ at the Emergency Economic Ministers’ Meeting held in February and the Public Discussion in March, Gohung-gun secured sufficient corporate demand by signing residency agreements with launch vehicle-related companies in March.

Additionally, regarding the Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex, there are plans to accelerate the establishment of the national industrial complex by applying for the preliminary feasibility study exemption in June.
