Creation of Parking Lot on Irregular Compensation Completed Sites around Pungnap Market, Songpa-gu

Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it has reorganized the area of Pungnap-dong 141-1 and seven other lots into a total of 44 parking spaces, including 23 shared parking spaces, to improve the residential environment for Pungnap-dong residents and revitalize the local commercial district.

Pungnap-dong is undergoing excavation and restoration projects for the cultural heritage site ‘Seoul Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortification.’ The district office has been conducting demolition by negotiating compensation for small-scale houses annually. As of May 2024, a total of 79 buildings are scheduled for demolition, and the vacant lots created by demolished buildings are temporarily used as parks, parking lots, and other convenience facilities for residents until full-scale excavation begins.

The area around Pungnap-dong 141-1 was originally a mix of resident-priority parking lots and irregularly fenced vacant lots, creating a maze-like environment. This issue arose because the maintenance periods for each lot varied from 2012 to 2021.

The gradual increase in demolition sites due to the progress of the excavation project makes planned and efficient space utilization difficult and causes various problems such as urban aesthetics deterioration, pedestrian inconvenience, and safety issues. The district is making multifaceted efforts to prepare high-level solutions for the chronic difficulties faced by Pungnap-dong.

This parking lot reorganization was also a decision made by the district after considering effective space utilization. First, the fences that divided the vacant lots and parking lots irregularly were removed to unify the area into a spacious vacant lot, and the entire site was neatly paved with durable asphalt. The existing 21 resident-priority parking spaces were consolidated and rearranged, and 23 new shared parking spaces available to anyone were created in the remaining space, presenting a solution for space utilization.

A district official expressed expectations regarding the parking lot installation, saying, “The shared parking lot, accessible to everyone, is expected to enhance convenience for visitors to the nearby Pungnap Market and invigorate the local commercial district.”

Meanwhile, the district is also working hard on residential environment improvement projects to prevent slumization in the Pungnap-dong area. On May 30, a 1km nightscape lighting was installed along the Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortification Moonlight Walkway, and the Youth Artist Center, opened last year using buildings with completed compensation, is bringing warm vitality to the area through abundant resident participation programs and exhibitions by young artists.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “I hope the newly created shared parking lot will reduce residents’ inconvenience and become a driving force for the local economy. We will also prepare various plans to utilize the compensated land in Pungnap-dong in the future and accelerate efforts to improve the quality of life for residents who have endured inconvenience for many years.”
