The agricultural lands in the areas of Wongok-ri and Ogang-ri, Geumcheon-myeon (67.4ha), are habitual flood zones. Originally, the Geumcheon Drainage Pump Station was installed in 1986, but due to the large inflow during heavy rains from the Innovation City and other areas, the Geumcheon 2 Drainage Pump Station was additionally installed, and the area has been managed without flood damage to date.

The Geumcheon 2 Drainage Pump Station was installed through the Geumcheon District Drainage Improvement Project (2017?2021) with a national budget investment of 8.8 billion KRW. It is equipped with five large submersible pumps that can drain 600 tons per minute into the Yeongsan River and operates together with the nearby Geumcheon Drainage Pump Station (which drains 990 tons per minute).

Governor Kim Young-rok visited the Geumcheon 2 Drainage Pump Station proactively to prepare for floods, typhoons, and heavy rains during the flood season, thoroughly inspecting the operational readiness, management status, and disaster response system. Governor Kim stated, “Due to abnormal weather such as climate anomalies and El Ni?o, unprecedented heavy rains are occurring. In preparation, we will thoroughly inspect and manage drainage facilities and ensure the safety management of workers such as repair facility monitors to prevent safety accidents.”

This inspection was conducted as a high-intensity joint inspection involving local governments and public institutions, including Jo Young-ho, Head of the Jeonnam Regional Headquarters of Korea Rural Community Corporation; Kang Su-jin, Branch Manager of Naju Branch; Jeong Gwang-hyun, Director of the Jeonnam Provincial Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Food; Lee Jae-tae, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly member; Ahn Sang-hyun, Deputy Mayor of Naju; as well as private sector participants such as Choi Won-seop, President of the Jeonnam Rural Leaders Association, and local farmers and fishermen. The inspection aimed to strengthen safety awareness and improve disaster response capabilities to eradicate disasters and accidents within Jeonnam Province.

Kang Su-jin, Branch Manager of Naju Branch, stated, “We have completed preliminary inspections and operational training for all 31 drainage pump stations managed by the Naju Branch to ensure thorough disaster preparedness, and we will do our best to create a safe farming environment.”
