Gijang County in Busan Encounters the Light of Nature... 'Gijang Firefly Ecological Experience Event'

Firefly Exploration at Jangansa Valley Area from the 8th to 11th

'Child, come to the forest where the light falls!'

Gijang County in Busan (Governor Jung Jongbok) will host the '9th Gijang Firefly Ecological Experience and Learning Event' for four days from the 8th to the 11th at the Jangansa Valley, an area where the natural ecosystem is well preserved.

The 'Gijang Firefly Ecological Experience and Learning Event' was launched to promote the habitat of fireflies, which are a representative environmental indicator insect, and to enhance the image of Gijang County as a clean and pollution-free city. The event, first held in 2011, marks its ninth edition this year. It provides a hands-on learning opportunity for local residents and tourists to observe and learn about the life cycle of fireflies, which are rarely seen in urban areas.

This year's event will mainly feature the 'Firefly Exploration,' where participants walk along the tranquil Jangansa Valley at night to observe fireflies.

The exploration takes place along a 1.4 km firefly trail from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and anyone can participate without a reservation, simply by registering on-site with no limit on the number of participants. Notably, the trail is an accessible road, making it easy for everyone, including those with strollers and wheelchairs, to enjoy the exploration experience.

Additionally, at the main event venue in the Jangansa Valley parking lot, there will be various attractions and activities such as making commemorative badges, tattoo stickers, and other experience booths, as well as a firefly exhibition and video screenings at the Firefly Ecology Center. There will also be three daily theatrical performances (at 8:00 PM, 8:40 PM, and 9:20 PM) themed around fireflies, performed in collaboration with the Gamagol Theater Company.

The Gijang County Agricultural Technology Center has produced the official logo for the Gijang Firefly Ecological Experience and Learning Event starting this year, using it for various promotional purposes and aiming to establish the event as a brand.

Governor Jung Jongbok stated, "The Gijang Firefly Ecological Experience and Learning Event is becoming established as an educational event that raises awareness about the importance of the natural environment through fireflies that beautifully decorate the early summer night forest," and added, "We will do our utmost to ensure that all participants can create happy memories with the fireflies."

The Gijang County Agricultural Technology Center has been exploring local firefly habitats since 2010 and reported that, in addition to the Unmunsan Firefly, which has the brightest and most beautiful light, the late firefly species can also be found in many areas of Gijang County.
