TVING's Monthly Active Index Steadily Increases This Year
Gap with Netflix Narrows through Original and Sports Content
Domestic OTT provider TVING's daily usage time has surpassed industry leader Netflix for the first time. Daily usage time refers to the total viewing hours on a given day, indicating that more viewers watched TVING.
According to IGAWorks Mobile Index on the 4th, TVING's daily usage time on the 28th of last month reached 2,500,010 hours, overtaking Netflix's 2,408,149 hours for the first time. This was driven by the release of the final episode of the drama "Seonjae Upgo Twieo" and the attention garnered by the KBO League baseball broadcast. Additionally, TVING's Daily Active Users (DAU) stood at 2,174,111, narrowing the gap with Netflix (2,303,025) to about 130,000 users.
The number of TVING service users has steadily increased this year. From January to May, the Monthly Active Users (MAU) rose from 6,563,522 to 7,313,279. MAU is an indicator representing the number of users who used the service within a month.
TVING's growth aligns with its high-quality content. Since December last year, it has consecutively hit with six original contents including "Ijae, Soon to Die," "Transit Love 3," "LTNS," "Crimescene: Returns," "Pyramid Game," and "High School Detective Club 3." OTT-exclusive content like the recently concluded tvN drama "Seonjae Upgo Twieo" also contributed to user acquisition.
Sports content also played a role. Since starting live broadcasts of the KBO League regular season in March, there have been user complaints about subtitle errors and screen freezing, but the number of users has steadily increased even after switching to a paid model in May. Additionally, live broadcasts of sports events such as the European Football Championship "Euro 2024" and the South American Football Championship "2024 Copa America" are upcoming. The monthly 5,500 KRW ad-supported subscription plan launched in March is also generating synergy effects.
