Goheung-gun, First Award Ceremony for Villages Excelling in Attracting Returnees to Farming and Fishing

Incentives Provided to 20 Outstanding Villages

Promoting Population Growth and Overcoming Regional Extinction Crisis

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 3rd that it held the first awards ceremony for 20 outstanding villages in the ‘2023 Best Villages for Returning Farmers and Fishermen’ at the Kim Yeon-su Room of the Gohung Cultural Center during the Communication Day event in June.

The ‘Best Villages for Attracting Returning Farmers and Fishermen’ project is a public-private cooperation initiative that breaks away from the existing administration-led population inflow policies. It empowers residents of 515 villages within Gohung-gun to take the lead in attracting population, providing support ranging from 3 million to 10 million KRW based on their attraction performance.

The county recognizes the risk of regional extinction as a problem that all residents must overcome together. After reviewing election laws and establishing legal grounds through various procedures, this project was promoted as a special policy of the 8th local government administration.

The awards were given to a total of 20 villages with excellent 2023 attraction performance of returning farmers and fishermen, including ▲Gohung-eup Deungam, Bongdong, Bonggye, Dangchon ▲Doyang-eup Nokdong 6-gu, Bongseo ▲Pungyang-myeon Bongyang ▲Dodeok-myeon Seonghang ▲Dohwa-myeon Hodeok ▲Dongil-myeon Bongnam ▲Yeongnam-myeon Sado, Sapo, Udu ▲Namyang-myeon Seonjeong, Hwadam ▲Donggang-myeon Wonyudun, Wondong ▲Daeseo-myeon Bonggye, Songrim ▲Duwon-myeon Seongdu.

The 20 villages received the ‘Best Village for Attracting Returning Farmers and Fishermen’ plaque and incentives of 3 million KRW each, totaling 60 million KRW, based on their attraction performance.

The incentives are designed to allow villages to autonomously plan and implement projects such as operating harmony programs for returning farmers and fishermen and improving village environments through residents’ meetings, thereby enhancing village vitality and enabling residents to feel a sense of accomplishment.

A county official stated, “To achieve a population of 100,000 in Gohung by 2030, the efforts and passion of both residents and public officials must come together,” adding, “We will devise various measures for mutual growth between local residents and returning farmers and fishermen.”

Meanwhile, following last year’s promotion of the Best Villages for Attracting Returning Farmers and Fishermen policy, Gohung-gun is making every effort to spread and overcome the regional extinction crisis by activating public-private cooperation population increase policies such as the ‘Incentive Support Project for Residents and Out-of-Towners with Outstanding Performance in Attracting New Residents’ this year.
