Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, has urged people to get vaccinated and follow personal hygiene rules in response to the nationwide increase in pertussis cases.
According to the county on the 4th, pertussis, a second-class legally designated infectious disease caused by the Bordetella bacteria, begins with a runny nose and cough and progresses to paroxysmal coughing.
It is mainly transmitted through droplets when an infected person coughs, and it is highly contagious, capable of infecting up to 17 people in a group without immunity.
To prevent pertussis, one should follow hygiene rules such as washing hands with soap under running water for more than 30 seconds and covering the mouth when coughing. If suspicious symptoms appear, it is advisable to visit a nearby medical institution for examination.
Infants and young children have a higher risk of developing severe symptoms if infected, so timely vaccination is essential.
Basic vaccinations are given at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, with additional doses administered at 15-18 months, 4-6 years, and 11-12 years to maintain immunity levels.
A health official from Jangseong-gun Public Health Center stated, “Pertussis cases have been sporadically confirmed in the Jeonnam region as well, so special caution is required,” and added, “We ask everyone to strictly adhere to vaccination and personal hygiene management.”
