Yangsan Branch Head of Ministry of Employment and Labor: "Regretful, Thorough Investigation Promised"
At around 9:05 a.m. on the 3rd, a man in his 60s died after being caught in a machine at a corrugated cardboard manufacturing company in Jinyeong-eup, Gimhae-si, Gyeongnam.
According to Gimhae Seobu Police Station and others on the 4th, Mr. A entered the malfunctioning machine to repair it when it suddenly started operating, causing his neck and other areas to get caught. He was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away.
The company where the accident occurred is subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, and a stop-work order was issued at the site.
The police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, whether there was negligence such as failure to follow safety regulations, and potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act by those involved with the company.
On the following day, the 4th, Kwon Guhyeong, head of the Yangsan branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, visited the company where the accident occurred, expressed condolences regarding the incident, and ordered a thorough investigation.
He also stated that all hazardous and dangerous factors at the workplace would be thoroughly inspected through future labor supervision.
Kwon said, "It is regrettable that an accident occurred even though it could have been prevented by identifying and improving hazardous and dangerous elements in advance through risk assessments of various non-routine tasks in the workplace."
He added, "During the current intensive period for industrial accident prevention targeting local workplaces, please do your utmost in safety management by inspecting risk factors related to the three major hazardous tasks, including non-routine work, to prevent industrial accidents."
