Gmarket 'Smile Delivery' Reduces 74 Million Shipping Boxes Over 10 Years

Cost Reduction in Shipping and Environmental Protection Benefits
Smile Delivery Appreciation Festival Until the 9th

Gmarket announced on the 4th that its next-day combined delivery service "Smile Delivery," launched in 2014, has saved 74 million delivery boxes over the past 10 years.

If all these boxes were laid out, they would cover an area of 30,917,000㎡, more than six times the size of Yeouido, Seoul, and if placed end to end, they would stretch 25,160,000 meters, easily exceeding half the Earth's circumference. The company also explained that this had an eco-friendly effect equivalent to protecting 16,600 trees.

From the customer's perspective, combined packaging helped save on shipping costs. Assuming a shipping fee of 3,000 KRW per delivery box, Gmarket estimated that approximately 222 billion KRW in shipping fees were saved over 10 years.

Smile Delivery is a core Gmarket service that offers fast delivery and free shipping benefits, allowing customers to receive their orders the next day if placed before 8 p.m. Its key feature is "combined delivery," where all items ordered by a customer are packed into a single box for shipment.

The usage rate of Smile Delivery has been steadily increasing. Compared to 2018, the number of users last year increased by 156%, transaction volume by 340%, payment transactions by 316%, and the average purchase price per customer by 66%.

Popular Smile Delivery products mainly consisted of groceries and daily necessities. Since 2018, the best-selling items have been toilet paper, probiotics, bottled water, fabric softener, laundry detergent, and instant rice. Bottled water, ramen, carbonated drinks, milk, and snacks were frequently repurchased in that order.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Smile Delivery, Gmarket is holding a mid-year clearance sale until the 9th. Popular products frequently sought by customers in the first half of this year are being sold at discounts of up to 54%.

A Gmarket official said, "Smile Delivery, the industry's first service introduced to provide stable service by standardizing delivery quality, is producing various effects such as environmental protection and cost savings. We plan to upgrade the service to improve logistics efficiency and expand product competitiveness going forward."
