Prosecutors Appeal First Trial Sentence of 'Drug Use' Musical Composer... "Sentence Too Light"

The prosecution has filed an appeal against the first trial verdict for a musical composer who used methamphetamine and roamed the streets.

The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 3rd that it has filed an appeal against the first trial sentence, claiming it was unjust, for Choi Mo (39), a musical composer in his 30s who was arrested and indicted on charges of using methamphetamine.

Previously, Judge Jo Aram of the Criminal Division 7 at the Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced composer Choi to 1 year and 6 months in prison on the 24th of last month for violating the Narcotics Control Act.

The prosecution stated the reasons for the appeal, citing that Choi had previously received a suspended sentence for drug-related offenses but used methamphetamine again, the long duration and multiple instances of the crime, and the social disturbance caused by his hallucination-induced rampage while intoxicated on drugs, arguing that "the sentence in the first trial is excessively lenient."

Choi is accused of using methamphetamine on February 22 and then wandering around the Samseong-dong area in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, entering an unmanned cafe and causing a disturbance by breaking utensils. He was also seen walking around Seolleung-ro shirtless and attempting to enter a cathedral.
