Automobile Tax Accounts for 20% of Total Unpaid Taxes
Strong Measures Such as Auctioning Habitual Delinquent Vehicles Implemented
On the 3rd, Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it had caught 472 vehicles during a joint crackdown on habitual automobile tax delinquents in towns and townships last month.
From the 7th to the 30th of last month, a task force composed of the city hall’s collection department and tax officers from towns and townships conducted the crackdown. As a result, the city confiscated license plates from 102 vehicles and issued confiscation warnings to 370 vehicles. The total amount of delinquent taxes for these vehicles is 267.7 million KRW.

The crackdown targeted vehicles that had missed automobile tax payments two or more times. Vehicles with a total delinquent amount of 300,000 KRW or more had their license plates confiscated, while those with fewer than two missed payments or those considered livelihood-related delinquents received confiscation warnings to encourage voluntary payment of the delinquent taxes.
According to the city, automobile tax delinquencies account for 20% of the city’s total delinquent tax amount. The city plans to foster a culture of diligent tax payment and actively secure tax revenue through strong collection activities.
Owners of vehicles whose license plates were confiscated can retrieve their plates upon payment of the delinquent taxes. For vehicles that do not pay even after license plate confiscation, the city intends to issue orders for surrender and forcibly tow the vehicles for public auction to cover the delinquent amounts.
Choi Seung-rin, head of the Anseong City Collection Department, said, "We will strengthen collection activities to ensure that citizens who fulfill their tax obligations faithfully are respected," and added, "We will continue to conduct vehicle crackdowns regularly throughout the year to promote a healthy tax payment culture."
