On the 31st of last month (local time), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held an 'International Tech Forum' in Athens, Greece, inviting over 100 global shipbuilding and shipping industry professionals, and unveiled an eco-friendly new technology that reduces the emission of toxic gases from ammonia fuel to zero, the company announced on the 2nd.
Currently, ammonia-powered ships being developed by global shipbuilders are attracting attention as eco-friendly vessels with zero carbon emissions, but the key issue in ship development has been how to safely eliminate the toxic risks of ammonia fuel.
In response, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries revealed its independently developed 'Integrated Ammonia Scrubber' technology at the forum to further enhance the safety of the ships.
The Integrated Ammonia Scrubber is a next-generation eco-friendly technology that absorbs emitted ammonia twice, reducing emissions to zero. The exhaust outlet for the flue gas is placed far from the crew living quarters to enhance safety.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also unveiled its self-developed 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ship Management System' and 'Remote Drone System.' The company emphasized that applying these systems to ammonia-powered ships can detect micro leaks of ammonia in real time, preventing accidents in advance.
Park Seung-yong, President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said, "HD Hyundai has the largest track record of gas carrier construction and proprietary technology in the world," adding, "We will lead the future ship market based on accumulated eco-friendly technology know-how."
