Conflicting Claims on Causes of Golf Course Visitor Accident
Visitor Claims "Caddy Remote Control" Allegation
It was recently revealed that two users were injured in a cart accident at a membership golf course in the Gyeonggi area.
According to Yonhap News, around 9:45 a.m. on the 18th of last month, a cart carrying two users in their 50s to 60s fell about 1.5 meters down a slope at a membership golf course located in Moga-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi Province.

At the time of the accident, one user was seated in the passenger seat and the other in the back seat. They stated that after finishing their tee shots and getting into the cart, the cart suddenly moved quickly about 20 meters, resulting in the accident. The two sustained facial and leg lacerations and bruises and received hospital treatment.
The cause of the accident is disputed between the golf course and the users. The golf course claims that the users operated the cart, while the users assert that the caddie remotely controlled the cart at the time of the accident. The golf course carts can be operated not only by direct driving but also remotely by a caddie using a remote control.
Since the golf course cart roads are equipped with guiding sensors, carts move slowly along designated routes and stop if they leave the road. However, the cart involved in the accident was moving at high speed, left the designated road, and fell down the slope. The police are investigating the detailed circumstances of the accident but are facing difficulties due to the absence of closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the accident site. The police plan to summon the caddie, golf course officials, and the users' party for questioning soon.
Meanwhile, last month, a man in his 50s driving a cart at a golf course in the Jeju area drowned and died. Around 4:50 p.m. on the 14th of last month, a couple in their 50s driving a cart at a golf course in Seogwipo-si, Jeju, fell into a pond about 3 meters deep. It is known that the husband fell into the pond while reversing the cart on a slope. Nearby golfers threw tubes to rescue them, but the husband was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest and eventually passed away.
It was found that safety facilities around the pond where the accident occurred were not properly installed. The Seogwipo Police Department plans to investigate golf course officials on charges of professional negligence causing death, and the accident cart has been sent to the National Forensic Service for examination.
