Suddenly Doing Gugok National Gymnastics While Browsing Rings
Arrested on Suspicion of Special Theft
Two female thieves who pretended to try on rings at an accessory store and then ran away with them were arrested by the police.
On the 30th, the official YouTube channel of the National Police Agency uploaded a video titled "Suddenly doing national calisthenics...? Why did you do that?" The video showed A and B stealing accessories while browsing at a fashion accessory store in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, on the afternoon of the 9th.
While A was looking at rings, B pretended to do calisthenics by swinging her arms back and forth and looked around. Then, when A handed B a silver ring, B put it into her pocket. They stole a total of four silver rings using the same method and calmly left the store.
After checking the closed-circuit television (CCTV), the store owner, who belatedly confirmed the theft, received a tip from an employee who spotted someone resembling the thieves.
The store owner, who was elsewhere, immediately ran to the employee and happened to meet a mobile patrol team conducting foot patrol nearby. The police assessed the situation and quickly ran to the scene where the suspects were located.
A and B initially denied the crime, but after being shown the CCTV footage and questioned, they eventually admitted to the crime and were caught on the spot. They were arrested on charges of special theft, and it was reported that they already had multiple prior convictions for similar crimes. Three other people’s ID cards and seven credit cards were also found in their bags.
Netizens who heard the news responded with various comments such as, "If the store didn’t have CCTV, it would have been difficult to uncover the crime," "Trying to steal silver rings but ended up wearing silver bracelets," "The longer the tail, the easier to catch," and "Thank you to the police officers for your hard work."
Meanwhile, the charge of special theft applies when two or more people jointly steal another person's property, and the statutory penalty is imprisonment for not less than one year and not more than ten years. Special theft is considered more serious and dangerous than ordinary theft, which is why the minimum sentence is imprisonment for at least one year.
