On the 12th hole (par 3) of the first round of the 79th US Women's Open (total prize money $12 million) held on the 30th (local time) at Lancaster Country Club (par 70, 6,583 yards) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, she took 10 strokes to hole out, resulting in a septuple-bogey. A septuple-bogey is a score that is 7 strokes over par.

Starting from the 10th hole (par 4), she collapsed at the 12th hole (161 yards). After her tee shot landed on the green, it rolled into a long back bunker. She got the ball onto the green with a bunker shot, but it rolled down the slope into the penalty area on the opposite side. After a one-stroke penalty, her fourth shot was short and went into the water again. Even after that, Korda, who hit the water twice more, sat down holding her head with a distressed expression. She finally got the ball on the green with her eighth shot and finished the hole with two putts.

Korda made three bogeys and one septuple-bogey in the front nine, slipping to 10 over par. Fortunately, in the back nine, she exchanged three birdies for three bogeys, maintaining her score. Her first-day score was 80, 10 over par. Once a strong favorite to win, Korda fell outside the top 100 and is now in danger of missing the cut. She had been having her best season, winning six times including a five-win streak in eight tournaments this year.
