8-Year Prison Sentence for 180 Billion Won Fraud...Prosecutors Say "Sentence Is Too Light"

The prosecution has filed an appeal against the case in which two women were sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of fraud involving approximately 180 billion won in Busan.

The Busan District Prosecutors' Office Eastern Branch announced on the 30th that it has appealed against A (in her 40s) and B (50), who were sentenced to eight years in prison in the first trial for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.

A and others were sentenced to eight years in prison in the first trial on charges of deceiving 119 victims and embezzling about 180 billion won in investment funds from October 2022 to July last year by claiming they would generate profits through dollar exchange gains.

This charge was confirmed while a trial for a separate fraud case involving 47.4 billion won, committed by the two using the same method, was pending in the second trial, and they were prosecuted separately from the existing trial, resulting in this sentence.

In the 47.4 billion won fraud case, the two were sentenced to eight and ten years in prison, respectively.

It is known that if the two trials are not merged in the future, A and others will serve the combined prison terms from both trials.

The first trial court stated, "The sentence was determined considering that A and others are serving prison sentences and the appeal trial is pending."

The prosecution explained, "Considering that the victims suffered enormous financial losses and severe mental distress, the large amount of fraud damages, and that a significant portion of the damages has not yet been recovered, we judged that the sentence in the first trial was too light and therefore filed an appeal."
