"Conspired with residents claiming 'Compensation will be paid upon application'
Embezzled 1.6 billion KRW through 23 false document submissions"
The prosecution has requested an 8-year prison sentence for a Cheonan City Hall security officer who embezzled 1.6 billion won in land compensation by falsifying documents.
At the trial held on the 29th at the Cheonan Branch of the Daejeon District Court, Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Jeon Gyeong-ho), the prosecution demanded an 8-year prison term for A (40), who was arrested and indicted on charges including violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (fraud), and also requested the confiscation of 1.073 billion won in criminal proceeds.
According to the prosecution, A conspired with residents of the project site from October to November last year while working in the Construction Road Department, promising to pay a reward if they applied for compensation, and falsified documents to receive 1.6 billion won from Cheonan City in 23 installments.
It was revealed that A embezzled 1.5 billion won of the 1.6 billion won compensation received and distributed 100 million won to the applicants.
In his final statement, A pleaded for leniency, saying, "I know that no words can forgive me, and I am truly sorry. I was defrauded of the money I saved through diligent public service and ended up gambling. I will live with remorse for the rest of my life."
The sentencing hearing for A is scheduled for the 24th of next month.
